From all the documentation that I've seen, I've been unable to find a way to view the "lgetdate" or "lputdate" information that is available via the QSTATUS command on the v6.0 runmqsc. It simply wasn't available on v5.3 via the QSTATUS command.

Has anyone, unfortunate enough to still have v5.3 around, found a way to see the last put date or last get date information for a queue?

You can use monitoring tools like Omegamon and extract queue stastics

v5.3 doesn't collect or store this data. So that's why you can't retrieve it.
