MRM Tag Creation error

I'm constructiong a output MRM tree of fixed length, and my input is an xml, if one of the input tag is null then my MRM tag in ouput will not be created.

How can make sure that the o/p tag is created even if the input returns null?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Set a default value in the message set?

Use COALESCE when assigning the tag in the ESQL?

Other methods are undoubtably possible & may be better.
