Advice in MC91 pdf for MQ HA config (HACMP or Veritas) specifies the configuration of /var on a local file system, and the configuration of /MQHA/data and /log on "shared" file systems. If the primary and failover servers for MQ QMs are virtualized then /var might also be found on a shared (SAN) file system. My question: Are the MC91 recommended procedures for configuring MQ (for HACMP or VCS) still viable/recommended for VMWare virtualized servers? |

It's a matter of onions and ogres. They both have layers, but one smells a bit better.
HA via MC91 applies to providing high availabilty for MQ *as an application*. The queue manager will move between different OS instances.
VMWare virtual servers provides HA for OS Instances, which may or may not contain MQ.
It comes down to a question of timing and budget. Can you achieve a faster failover time for the same queue manager using HA or using VMWare virtualized servers? We presume that the time for the qmgr to start up and recover itself is going to be "the same" in both cases. Do you have budget to run HACMP/etc, or the budget to run virtualized VMWare servers?
Can you afford the production performance hit of using VMWare to host your servers in the first place? Or have you scaled your environments to alleviate that? |

My question has to do with using the MC91 HA approach on virtualized servers and whether it makes sense to do that. The computer center is already setup with VMWare ESX servers. In this environment does it make sense to implement a MC91/HACMP type solution? How do onions and ogres smell when mixed together? |

ivanachukapawn,
I won't be much help, as I am in the same boat, just thought we could compare notes a bit. My setup: I have 4 VM's, 4 qmgrs, across a 2/2 split DC's. Both VM's are on rpa/lun SAN's, and I followed the MC91 HA approach and mounted the filesystems on the rpa's. At this point we were going to implement VCS, but given the new VMware SRM solution upgrade approaching, we are going to hold off on VCS. Right now, I am struggling with designing a temporary/manual back-up/failover solution, in which a cloned VM with the same VIP's could be powered up when a failover occurs. There are many questions unanswered in that scenario, so still searching for interum solutions suggestions from anyone. Anyone? Anyone?? Bueller... Bueller??? LOL
What do you have going on exactly? |

I was just doing research for a potentital HA MQ installation in a VMWare environment. Never did it. I too not much help. What is that? Bueller day off? |

Ok.. Well, I guess we cannot compare notes then... lol
Anyone out there that has done this, or close to this, or anything that remotely sounds like what I am doing??
Bueller? lol |

in VMWare there are no special steps for Mq Series installation. You just need to install MQ series on one Box using normal steps.
VMware will failover the MQ on other node including server ip incase of any abnormal situation.
Its VMWARE which take cares of everything while failover... |
