At long last, for those of you who have been living the drama with me... we turn out the lights on a couple of hundred old servers and turn on the lights at our shiny new data center. New building, new city, new hardware, new network devices, new subnets, upgraded OS, zone architecture, upgraded versions of every Websphere product we operate.

If everything goes perfectly, it will be about 28 hours start to finish.

I'm taking a pillow and blanket to the office in the morning. Seriously.

If you haven't heard from me in 48 hours, call the authorities.

PS And our team thanks you for helping us along the way.

Bruce,

I laughed so loudly that I actually doubled over my keyboard.

I usually get in trouble with my humor.

Obviously true, given that thus must have been typed with a nose.

So how was the night on the hard floor? I bet things are going mostly smoothly. (Apart from the odd snafu or fubar that I have no doubt you'll straighten out in a jiffy!)

Here's a question: should we call medical assistance for you, or notify the police that you've gone postal and they should send in SWAT teams to rescue any survivors?

I mean, you've got a pillow for stealthy smotherings (sys admins), have the blanket wrapped into a rope for ninja strikes (teams of testers) and management you can deal with by claiming a high floor window is the door to the room where the conference call is being held.

(Cue the music to Lemmings)

I'd trust her judgment on this. If it needed doing, there's no reason to let there be any survivors...

Let's have a moment of silence for the fallen.

While we wait for Shirley to emerge.

IT WORKED!

I can hardly believe it myself. Our team had a couple of hiccups, but nothing we couldn't recover in short order. Only 18 hours at the office on Saturday, with a return on Sunday for another five. (Although, honestly, I haven't had the energy to take the pillow and blanket out of my car yet.)

I would've updated sooner, but this morning we've been busy trying to convince the DBAs not to shut down our old WMB repositories till we get a chance to gracefully quiesce the old brokers.

I appreciate your development of various rescue plans for me. As usual, you've been imaginative and your attention to detail is outstanding.

Thanks guys!
