I have a need to attempt to set up an manual HA environment on a v6 MQ installation without using MSCS. Has anyone done this. Can it be done? Any pointers, Installation and configuration documentation you could share. So far I have been hitting a blank wall in searches.

By manual, what do you mean ?
You have a share resource like a SAN, and you want to store data from two QM on it, and then start them manually one each?
Do you want another cluster solution on Windows then MSCS ?

And you will continue to hit a brick wall...MSCS is the only supported way of doing it with V6.0, but if you want to go ahead and give it a try in an unsupported way I wish you luck.

Anecdotally, I do know of someone who actually suggested creating a queue manager of the same name on an identical server, with the log/data paths on a separate drive, and then deleting the directory structure but leaving the Registry untouched. The manual HA element was to remove the disk from the 'dead' server and put it in the 'live' one

This was seriously posited as a solution, and worse it was by an employee of the vendor.

It's very easy to create an HA setup for an MQ v6 installation without using MSCS.

Run it on Unix and use HACMP...

Or run it on Z and use shared qmgrs...

On WINDOWS... however, the only option is essentially what exerk has mentioned - perform the same system changes that the MSCS configuration accomplishes - moving files to shared disk, defining the qmgr on both machines, etc. etc. etc...

You can probably even use the presupplied ha commands to do this, if they don't specifically require MSCS to be loaded on the system.

I know someone who tried that too, and that system is now rebuilt using MSCS. Whether the failure was due to all the other associated operations required to HA a queue manager on Windows NOT being carried I can't say - I just got to clear up the mess!

Thank you everyone and everybody for the responses. Guess that was why I was hitting a blank wall. I choked on my laugh with the UNIX suggestion. Very good. I just got off the call and my suggestion was you cannot do it without MSCS. That was acceptable.

Thanks everyone. Another 1/2 day behind me.
