If you want.

The better question is why you want to learn a different technology. Clearly you have the WMQ knowledge (hence the certification) so what will learning this new technology allow you to do? Branch out into development, move into WAS administration, WMB administration, which?

Java's a perfectly reasonable thing to learn. It may not be the best use of your time depending on your intent. But it could be.

Context please.

I'm a firm believer that WMQ Sysadmins need to understand WMQ application development. I believe also that app developers need to understand what sysadmins do.

So, the WMQ native APIs (MQCONN, etc.) and the Java/JMS api's will help you.

As you have entered into the region of middleware then why dont you learn the things that are associated with infrastructure as Vitor has suggested. That would be great combination I would say.
Even the MQ on different platforms as AIX and MF has lots of things to learn and understand.
If you are interested to learn Java then you can opt Message Broker where in you can try implementing Java concepts. Its good too.
