Hi
As you know, MB7 coming without DB2 as a part of the license.
In some projects since 2001 and version 2.0, DB2 tables used for internal infrastucture (service meta-data, store request/reply marameters, etc.).
Meaning of that - client will need to pay for DB2 license or redevelope infrastructure.
Will appreciate answer if you have same problem or know about problem in other projects. _________________ Best regards.

You have never been licensed to use the DB2 that comes with Broker for non-Broker product data.
If you have been using it for routing tables and etc. then you are in theory out of compliance - although this does vary somewhat based on what your IBM sales representative thinks.
If you're so concerned about having to pay for a database license, just use JDBC and MySQL. |

Historically WebSphere Message Broker has made use of a number of prerequisite products as part of the basic installation. One of these elements was the requirement for a configuration database in which the WebSphere Message Broker stored data both as part of its configuration and during runtime processing.
As a result the licence for WebSphere Message Broker included provision of entitlement for users to install on the same machine, a single instance of IBM DB/2 UDB for sole use by the WebSphere Message Broker product for this purpose.
WebSphere Message Broker version 7.0 no longer requires any prerequisite Database installation and as a result DB/2 product entitlement is no longer provided as part of the included license terms.
In Migrating to WebSphere Message Broker v7.0 any customers wishing to continue to make use of the database must purchase a DB/2 Workgroup Server Edition license. This license may be applied to the existing installation without the need to reinstall DB/2.
More information regarding the function provided by DB/2 Workgroup Server Edition can be found at the following URL :
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r7/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2.luw.licensing.doc/doc/r0053238.html
Please contact your IBM sales representative or IBM business partner for information on obtaining a license for DB/2 Workgroup Server Edition. |

Thank for your comments.
First of all I am also IBM, and we have contacted product labs for this issue.
You can say "non-Broker product data", but data used for correlation and definitions in MB-based infrastructure. Using DB2 as infrastucture was recommendation of IBM specialists and this becomes a problem after 7-8 years. _________________ Best regards.

Hi yaakovd,
I wonder if the IBM Specialists meant, use the broker's database for the "non-Broker product data", or simply meant use the database for the concept (on the second one you would have had to buy a license)...so from my point of view, someone saved the customer 7-8 years of license money
The database was never given as a freebie for the customer to use in the first place (if it was the case, customer's would never ever need to buy database softwares). Also one should not have allowed developers/admins to possibly play with the broker meta-data.
Finally all said and done, from a very straightforward, sales rep's angle, you will need to invest in a DB2 license and migrate the non-broker data.
Regards. |

Hi elvis
from other side I can say same about MQ, which also coming as part of MB license - please do not use it for non-MB data transportation...
Also please read license of MB 6.1:
Quote: |
Your licensed use of WebSphere Message Broker for the storage and management of data used and generated by the other IBM program, and not for other data management purposes. DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition is to be used only by the internal components of the program. For example, DB2 Restricted Enterprise Edition can be used as a repository for configuration information generated by WebSphere Message Broker and cannot be used to build or extend custom applications that store business data; |
There is only restriction on: "inbound connections to the database from other applications for queries or report generation"
So... I guess it answers if it was legal or not. I've used exactly for configuration and request/reply information on local DB with access by MB only. _________________ Best regards.
