Pls read abt the Model Queues and its properties !!
*NOTE : if you are on windows and using mq explorer, then pls check the gray area of model queues properties ( check properties for the system defined temporary dynamic queues). Gray area will give the answer to your questions ( You'll find gray area under properties Open input/output count, current Queue Depth etc.)
Please also have a look at the concept of ghost queues. that might help you to get in deeper.
