I started preparing for the certification (095) exam. In this process, I found a sample question on IBM site and I think its answer listed on the site is NOT correct (?).

Question:
"An MQSeries for Windows NT queue receiving messages from MQSeries for OS/390 becomes full. From where should the overflow messages be retrieved? "

As per IBM webpage, answer (C)is "the dead letter queue at the MQSeries for Windows NT system ".
I think the correct answer should be (D): "the dead letter queue at the MQSeries for OS/390 system".

Since SENDER can not push messages into RECEIVER QUEUE as it is full, the overflow messages must end up in SENDER's dead-letter queue. Please let me know whether this is valid explanation or not.

Thanks in advance,

nope - the website is correct.

When messages go to a DLQ it is typically an indication of a problem (i.e. the queue is full). Why would you want to alert the OS390 administrator that there is a problem on the NT server? By doing it this way the NT administrator will be alerted of the issue. Consider this issue when the OS390 and NT servers belong to 2 different companies.

Regards

The OS/390 manager doesn't know - and doesn't care - about queues belonging the the WinNT manager. If only the appropriate channel is operating, messages will be sent to WinNT - regardless of the avalaibility of their destination queues.

If the destinatiion queue becomes full, messages will go the DLQ. If DLQ also becomes full (in that case the MQ admin is not worth his/her salary
the WinNT manager will stop communications and will not accept any more messages. The messages will then stuck in OS/390 XMIT queue, but when it becomes full, the OS/390 manager will not allow any MQPUTs to the queue. So there is no possibilty for the messages sent from OS/390 to end up in OS/390 DLQ

Thank you Marcin and JC for providing me some important points on DLQ role in distributed communication.
