Hi,
I have questions regarding the Dead.letter.queue.Recently we got an alert stating the current depth of the dead.letter.queue has increased >0.Then under MVS/ESA utility i selected the DLQ option to delete the queue depth. My question is deleting the queue depth under dead.letter.queue will it be harmful to the MQ systems. |

You don't delete a q depth, you delete the messages in the queue which will cause the depth to report as zero.
Deleting messages from the DLQ in not harmful to MQ.
Deleting messages from the DLQ may be harmful to you career if you don't understand what they contain and why they are there. _________________ Peter Potkay

Well presumably whoever configured the alert expected someone to do something with the message that arrived there, or they'd have configured the monitor to delete the message rather than raise an alert.
But no, WMQ won't mind the message being deleted. Whoever sent it and expected it to be processed might be a tad cross. Also the guy who configured the alert might be miffed you're ignoring him..... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Messages arrive in the DLQ most often because they could not be delivered to the destination queue that the originating application requested. Deleting messages from the dead-letter queue most often means deleting business transactions.
You can construct a dead-letter queue script (input to the IBM-supplied dead-letter handler utility) to re-process the messages to their destination. Refer to the WMQ System Administration manual.
No damage to WMQ; just loss of valuable business data. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

In general if you ask, increasing queue depth of DLQ is not at all a good sign. (neither from mq point of view nor from application points of view.) _________________ *Life will beat you down, you need to decide to fight back or leave it. |
