I would like to read AMQERR01.LOG ... but there is no such file under WAS
(using Embedded Messaging)

Where does MQ under WAS report the errors
it used to report into AMQERR01.LOG when MQ Server was present ?

SystemOut.log and SystemErr.log

I cant remember the exact location but its something like <WAS_INSTALL>/profiles/profilename/logs/server1

Anyway search for the files I mentioned and you should see them.

Thanks - I think I can deduce the PATH from the sys envir vars ...

Or I can use the "find" command.
