read manuals/redbooks, create test qmgrs, test, test, test ..

this is the easiest and most straighforward way to get to know mq. i attended 2 mq admin courses, the first one was basically what i already knew by reading the manuals/redbooks myself, the 2nd one was a little bit advanced, but not too useful at my work...

Well the manuals are the cheapest path around! There is MQSoftware that runs classes that are more reasonably priced and they will bring the class to your company to save travel $$$$.

My company uses these folks for a lot of MQ training!

Good luck

How do you know that the IBM supplied CBT courses or on site training would be too expensive right now?

I would not make a blanket guess that you could not get a deal.
