Hi All,
I need to take a decision on whether to use TDE or MQ alone for my requirement. The requirement is, Information in the form of messages needs to transferred from one system to another. We have been using MQ already for its powerful features like Asnchronous communication, relability, scalability, persistence, restart and recovery etc...
There was a question raised on why not use TDE as TDE also uses MQ as underlying transport protocol? So TDE also inherits async, time independent etc features...
When we go for TDE over MQ?
1.When the requirement is file transfer (Source - File,Destination - File)
2.When the size of the file is greater than 100 MB, TDE compresses and sends the file
Can TDE accept source information in the form of messages?
As in my case the source and the destination are messages and less than 100 MB, MQ alone can suffice.
Is my decision correct for the requirement? Am I have to consider any other features? Please advice |

TDE stands for Tivoli Data Exchange and it's a Metastorm product. There is a saying why reinvent the wheel when there is an existing product such as TDE to facilitate file transfer. So use TDE. The better option would be to use PM4Data (Process Manager for Data). In regards to message size, for file transfer it is advisable to set within the range of 0.5MB to 4MB at the TDE level. For performance reason it is advisable to set the message size to 0.5 MB at the TDE level. How TDE works is that it grabs a file, splits it into messages and routes the messages using the QMA's creates at the MQ level. Hope this help. |

If you don't already have a Managed File Transfer product then consider the new IBM WMQ File Transfer Edition. |

TDE is actually sold by IBM under the Tivoli brand. It's also the same product as PM4Data, sold under license to Metastorm (and before bought them, CommerceQuest). _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
