It is very difficult to get down time at our site. We are about to start negotiating for down time in development, to apply some fix packs.

We need to patch both MQ 6x and WMB 6.0x. Of the two, the WMB has higher priority.

Best business practice (to me) says to patch only one product at a time. But we have such trouble getting downtime, I wonder if the risk is justified to apply both fix packs in the same maintenance event.

Thoughts?

Only problem I can foresee if you do both if is one of the servers has problems, do you then stop rolling both products to the remaining servers? Or carry on with only one product on the remaining servers?

As it's Dev, personally I would roll both and clear up any problems after...however, as I am having one of my 'days' maybe I'm not the best person to consider advice from

It's certainly best practice, but I'd be inclined to do both in the average situation.

Questions that might inform your decision:

- how extensive is your post-upgrade testing?
- how long does it take?

The answers will determine how plausible it is to test between upgrades, and how likely it is that problems will be found during this process.

I think we will try for both on the first of the dev servers. We are asking for a maintenance window of several hours, with the thought that we'll apply the MQ patch and then ask some of the app teams to do a brief validation before we apply the WMB patch.

There will be several weeks between this and the next dev server, plenty of time for burn in. If there's trouble, then we'll proceed with rolling out a single patch only to the remaining servers.

Thanks, guys, for your ideas.
