When I think of linear logging, I mostly think of it in terms of transactional units of work for a persistent message. But, linear logging has a media recovery aspect to it, too.

I've never seen an IBM presentation, Redbook, best practices doc, or anything that recommends how/what/when to use the rcdmqimg and rcrmqobj to backup/restore a MQ manager and its objects in the event of media failure.

I realize the answer is "it depends" but should the rcdmqimg command be issued every night? Every week? Can I just issue one rcdmqimg for the entire MQ manager and from it, restore any and all MQ objects? What if I take nightly backups of my drives where my /data and /log files are at? Why do I then even need to do a rcdmqimg at all?

I'm looking for real-life implementations of media recovery strategies and appreciate any that the community has to share.

There is a fairly old IBM redbook "MQSeries Backup and Recovery" at http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg245222.html

A daily rcdmqimg is usually OK, but if your object definitions don't change very often running SupportPac MS03 (save qmgr) once a week could be a suitable substitute.

It all depends on the volume and persistence of the messages going through your environment. We run rcdmqimg every hour right before running MS0L. Archive multiple times a day or not at all that day... depends all on traffic and logsize of course.

Have fun
