Hello,
We have a Hub & Spoke Architecture where in the Hub is a box running MQ on a VM partition and is pretty stable, meets our requirements.
Per our MQ licensing, we need to pay fee for the physical box rather then the VM partitions. Thus if we have a really beefy box (4 CPUs) and say have 10 VM partitions on it, each VM partition running an instance of MQ, we end up paying fee for only 4 MQ licenses (as the license is for the physical box and not for VM partition). The idea being explored is that all the spoke MQ servers can be hosted on VM partitions on the same physical box so that instead of paying for 10 - 15 licenses, we end up paying only for 4 CPU licenses (though we still have 10 individual servers in the form of VM partitions).
I have been researching this forum on the topic of using MQ on VMWare and see that Performance is one of the reported issues. We have been using VMWare for our MQ server with no performance issues.
I would like to find out from folks who have tried the above appoach to bring down licensing costs. If yes, would you please share your experiences? If not, are there any pitfalls in above approach?
Thanks

Thanks for the link Peter.
Am still curious if anyone has implemented their MQ infrastructure on a VM farm.
Thanks

It's unlikely that any site has it all on VMware. Many sites are commissioning virtual servers for new applications including MQ and they seem to work OK.
I would trust the hardware based LPAR on P-Series or Z-Series more than the VMWare software but some people swear by ESX. |
