Usually the MQ will be connected with MQ using bindings Mode. So there will be a limitation from MQ that the server and MQ has to be in the same box to support XA transaction.
But in case of AQ the MDB is connected using Datasource. So if the AQ and MDB is the same box or different box is not an issue for XA transaction rite ??.
Your app can connect to mq in client mode and still use mq as a resource manager in xa transactions, provided you have a special version of client installed called extended transactional client(etc). In java this is available as mqetclient.jar
