All,
Today, I had another talk with an IBM Impact person about MQ and Impact 2009 and my feeling that MQ is getting lost at Impact.
What do others think about Impact from a "pure" MQ point of view? If you are going as an attendee, then I believe there are enough MQ sessions to make it worth your while but from a vendor point of view (MQ only), it is hard to justify the huge vendor fee (that jumps every year by large amounts).
Does a big-bang conference work for most people? Do you get any face time with presenters? Or is it less personal now? (Can you even wade through the crowd to talk to T.Rob or Paul C.?)
I'm trying to convince the IBM Impact people to bring back T & M conference to North America and throw in message broker & ESB (i.e. like what is/was offered in Europe). Attendances would probably be in the range of 1500-2000 people. An added bonus would be that far more locations could potentially host the conference (Chicago, Boston, Orlando, etc..). (IBM always says that monster conferences have to be in Vegas.)
What does everyone else think?
Given that the US is on the abyss of a great recession or potentially a depression (yes, you heard it from me first) is anyone actually going to Impact 2009 (May 3rd, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV)?
Regards,

Hi Roger,
Personally I prefer IMPACT to T&M as I get to hear other stuff as well. I only get the option to attend 1 major event each year and Impact gets my vote mainly due to the broader range of topics. To be honest, I find little new in the MQ and Broker space each year to justify a week away so the fact that there are many other end to end pitches proves useful to me.
I have also found the accesability of the presenters still just as easy, if not better than the old T&M's that I used to present at.
Maybe its because I am now an attendee rather than presenter but the large format suits me better.
Oh, and I'll be there next year.

I'm with you, Roger! The first time out with Impact was a real disappointment for pure MQ people. They should have named it the SOA Tech Conference, as SOA was overshadowing everything. I do miss the days when those old T&M conferences were held in various places.
I think it's just IBM that developed a bias toward Las Vegas. But you're correct that, in this economy, a lot less companies are going to pop for a trip to Las Vegas than they might a few other cities. IBM just always assumes that if your company is buying their products and services that they have oodles of money to spend on conferences, etc. _________________ IBM Certified MQSeries Specialist
