The SAP adapter nodes in 6.1 are now replacing the functionality previously provided by WBI mysap.com adapter. Is there an application specific component that we still need to install on SAP side to facilitate this communication as with the mysap.com adapter?

As far as I know the answer is NO. Message Broker uses the JCA 1.5 based WebSphere Adapter for SAP. Its the same adapter if you used Process Server or WESB. You will need to copy the SAP JCo files (a jar file and a couple of dlls) and make it available for the broker runtime.
