If anybody can answer the following or point me to the right documentation, I'd really appreciate it!
We have about 1500 AS400's that get client connections to z/OS using the CAF (with two SVRCONN channels per AS400). One of our network guys says there's an awful lot of traffic due to "reverse DNS lookups", and he think it's associated with these client connections. Assuming he's right, does anybody know if there's a way I can disable these reverse DNS lookups? And if that's even possible, what is the downside?

Location: US: west coast, almost. Otherwise, enroute.

CONNAME can be either an ipaddress(port) or something discoverable (hostname, for example) by DNS. Name to ipaddress(port) and ipaddress(port) to name enable inbound and outbound flows to be dynamicly resolved by DNS.

The advantage is that the ipaddress can change over time for failover or for tcp workload distribution.

As an alternative to the DNS lookups, I suppose you could fix (hard-code) all your CONNAME attributes with ipaddress(port).

The advantages (dynamic name resolution) would seem to greatly outweigh the disadvantages (DNS flows).

Edit: The how-to about this is in the WMQ Intercommunications manual, Chapter 20. Setting up communication for z/OS.

The best solution for you not only for MQ but for all your apps, etc.. is to implement the reverse DNS names with a high lifetime for each entry, one simple free DNS server can make it.

If you already have reverse DNS entries for your hosts what you need to do is to increase the lifetime of your entries.
