Hi all,
Is it possible to Backward migrate from MQ V6 to MQ V5.3 without deleting the queue manager and re-creating once WMQv5.3 has been re-installed??
I have not been able to locate links that confirms whether it's possible...
Thanks!!!!!

No, this is not possible. The persistent data files, queues and logs, are migrated to the format required by the new release. _________________ MQSeries.net helps those who help themselves.. |

forcing me to ask these questions:
what make you to think like this? any reason
why you need it?
Why go back to V5.3, as its out-of support.

No, you'll need to restore from a system backup if you want the old details back.
Probably easier to delete & recreate if you've got the script. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

We are about to embark on upgrading WMQ on our Microsoft clustered WebSphere Message broker(V6) machines from V5.3 to MQ V.6.
We need to structure a regression plan and as you know, the broker is already associated with the current queue manager(V5.3).
For whatever reason we need to regress, I need to know if the original queue manager will still be able to start. If not, then we have to re-create the queue manager and as a result the broker as well.

If you regress the software level for WMQ back to v5.3 then any queue manager which has been started while the software was at v6 will not then start unless a) the data files are also regressed by means of a system restore or b) the queue manager is deleted & recreated under v5.3.
I think this was clear from the previous posts. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Thanks for all the responses guys.
Although I know this is an extreme measure, our client is very diligent - hence the need for this regression test! |

There's nothing extreme about a regression plan. Sometimes you just have to back out.... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Why do you have to recreate the Broker?
There are links peppered throughout this forum that lead to official IBm doc on how to roll bacl from 6.0 to 5.3, and what you need to do ahead of that so you can do it if you have to. _________________ Peter Potkay

question1
If I believe that i may need to use the queue manager at V5.3 again. Do i have to delete the queue manager at V6 and then recreate it at V5.3... or is it possible for the original queue manager definition to start up at V5.3 once the
- queue manager directory
- log directory
- Windows Registry
(HKLM\SOFTWARE\IBM\MQSeries\CurrentVersion\Configuration\QueueManager)
have been restored from backup. |

If you've restored that lot from backup, then you've logically deleted the v6 queue manager by overwriting it with the v5.3 queue manager. If at this point you start the queue manager with the v5.3 software then it will start, if you start it with the v6 software it will convert these files to v6 and start. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

That link doesn't say anything about having to recreate the broker if we recreate the queue manager when going back to 5.3. _________________ Peter Potkay
