Are you considering an open source approach?

When the final fate of MQJExplorer has been decided, that may indeed be an option. If it becomes a chargeable component, I can't see a business model that would warrant it being open source.

A future enhancement will be to externalize a Java Interface such that additional features could be trivially added. The interface would supply the context, provide support for menu items and more. This would result in MQJExplorer becoming a framework for additional tooling. Again ... this is just an idea.

May I ask, what benefit would you see for giving away the source to this project? Please consider from the perspective of the MQ user community as well as from the developers/distributers?

Neil,
I definitely think there are benefits to making this open source, especially from the standpoint of making it a better product. Many of us have already thought of great things that can be added to this product to make it better, and even you mentioned how there is a "huge" amount of stuff you are considering for addition. Obviously, if the source code was available and we set up something similar to http://www.sourceforge.net we could get a group of MQSeries developers to work together to add additional components/functionality to this already outstanding product.
However, I also know how stringent IBM's intellectual property rules are (like how everything you do, even in your free time, belongs to them), and I've also seen instances where they will relegate a perfectly good tool to the archives rather than release it open source. So I definitely hope they do something with this, even if it means we have to pay for it.

For the life of me I can't get this program to work. It starts up just fine, but when I tell it to show a queue manager, it doesn't complain about my entry, but when I try to expand the queue manager that it now lists to see what's below it, nothing happens. And actually, there isn't even the little icon to the left of it to indicate that it is even expandable at all. I have tried connecting to both remote and local queue managers... Anyone else having these issues? The only thing that I think might be screwing me up is the fact that my queue managers aren't running on the standard port. But when it prompts me for the connection name, I'm putting MACHINENAME(port#) Is this the way your program expects it Neil? Or does it not support non-standard ports yet?

Reports are coming in of about 75% success - 25% failure. I am still trying to see a pattern. Make sure that you have IBM's MA88 SupportPac correctly installed. Fortunately, in this build there are plenty of diagnostics.

From the File menu, pull-down log and cut/paste the results after an error. Either post here or email to kolban@kolban.com.

Well, unfortunately for me, no errors are showing up. When I double click on the name of the queue manager I have added (in the left column) I see in the log that a "new queue manager is selected!" and that's all. Nothing else. I also noticed that one of the pre-reqs is MA88. I was curious about this because I noticed you packaged com.ibm.mq.jar with MQJExplorer anyway. So why does the user need MA88? (BTW, I do have MA88 installed on my box)

Have you tried right-clicking the queue manager icon and selecting connect? It may be as simple as that.

A question came in:

Can I use MQJExplorer with Solaris?

The answer is a definite yes. You can either install MQJExplorer on Solaris in which case you should install:

o MQSeries
o MA88
o MQJExplorer
o Have access to X-Windows

else you may run MQJExplorer on a different platform (e.g. Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP) and select a remote queue manager ... see
http://kolban.com/mqjexplorer/Help/selecting_queue_managers.htm for details.

If there is demand, I will build a Solaris based installer to complement the Windows versions and, the as yet unreleased Linux version.

Unfortunately when I right click on anything within MQJExplorer, nothing pops up... I'm going to try this on linux and see if I have any better success....

Tony, I have had one other report of such. If you would like, please email me at kolban@kolban.com with your phone number and a good time to call and I will be delighted to assist. Some questions for inclusion in the email:

1. What JVM are you using?
2. What level of MQSeries server?
3. Is the queue manager local or remote?
4. What operating system level is MQJExplorer running upon?
5. Anything abnormal showing up in the console log?

Neil

Folks, some new function in the works, am very pleased with this litte feature so thought I'd show early results.

This feature adds a bar chart to the queue view to quickly show how full (or empty) a queue is. A quick screen shot follows:

MQJExplorer vs. Localized messages - no problem anymore!!!

To avoid pitfalls when using specific code pages ( non US-English ), you have to install the international version of JVM. Plus, classpath have to contains the correct path to i18n.jar.

Without these, MQJExplorer's Message Browser... caused exceptions.

Neil,
Here are a few things I noticed that you might want to add in future versions:
1. Minimize/Maximize buttons on the Queue Statistics Window - right now there is only a close button. So if I want to continue doing other tasks in MQJExplorer while a Queue statistics window is running I need to drag it off to a corner (it stays in front even when it loses focus)
2. Queue Filter based on keywords - currently it just uses a list of check boxes to choose which queues you want to see. It would be nice if there was something analogous to the DIS QL(TEST*) with matching wildcards so you can set up queue views more quickly than clicking a bunch of checkboxes.
3. (may have already been fixed in your new version - haven't tested it yet though) Queue statistics on current depth, not just depth high - If I am watching some really volatile queues where the depth is going up and down, I only see a depth high change when it goes higher than it ever has since I started the queue statistics report. Therefore, when the depth is going down, I can't see this from the queue stats report. Depth high is a good statistic to keep track of, but it would be addtionally helpful if we also had current depth.
4. Click on a queue name in queue statistics report to view that queue - Just like it does when you double-click on a queue name in the list of queues for a particular queue manager.
5. View beyond 200 messages on a queue - Maybe only show 200 at a time, but a forward and back button would be useful, maybe even a input box where you can enter a particular message number to start looking at...

These are just a few "wishlist" things. There definitely aren't any glaring holes in this program. It does everything MQExplorer does and much more. I am looking forward to downloading the new version and trying it out.
