cluster setup.
I know you need at least two full repos qmanagers in a cluster, can you have more then two and would that be wise say from a cost standpoint, etc?
Also if non clustered qmanagers are already defined, say on aix or mvs, what needs to be done to take at least two existing qmanagers and make them full repos?
Is it wiser to have the full repos on mvs vs aix?
Thanks

Yes.

No additional $ cost for being a full repos. A very slight increase in processor utilization.

A cluster sender channel to a full repos, a cluster receiver channel, and altering the qmgr CLUSTER attribute to name the cluster it is to be a full repository for.

Wiser? One of the often-cited rules is to place full repositories on your most reliable platforms. Full repositories on both platforms would be ok.

Ian Vanstone is on record in saying that every cluster should have full repositories numbering exactly two.

Neither shall you count to one, unless you therefore count to two, nor shall you count to five, THREE SIR, THREE.

Every cluster should have two FRs. It makes things less reliable if you use one, and more confusing if you use three or more.

Reliability vs. confusion... hmmm.

There's a good discussion on the Vienna list serve where it seems to make sense that things can become unpredictable when you have more than 2 FRs.

If you have only 2 FRs and both go down you know your cluster can continute to work and you know that no cluster updates will happen until 1 of those FRs comes back.

If you have 3 FRs and 2 of them go down you might think that all the remaining PRs would somehow be connected to the 3rd remaining FR. Not true. A PR only ever connects to 2 FRs. In a cluster with 3 FRs where 2 FRs go away you will find yourself with some PRs still being connected to a live FR and others not. You now have a somewhat random status of cluster update capability.

Use 2 FRs per cluster. Period.

I think the above is setting up a partial repo qmanager. Maybe I was not very clear so let me try this.
Say I have ten qmanagers defined, how do I take two of the ten qmanagers and make them full repos?

Thanks

The cluster manual is very clear about that: set their repos/reposnl attribute and create a manual cluster sender on each to the other.
That is enough.

Enjoy

Ok thanks I was going to ask how does a FR know about another FR qmanager and you answered my question if I am reading the last entry correctly, that is set the repo parameter and define sender cluster channels to the other FR.

Cluster setup and other cluster-related subjects are covered in the WMQ Queue Manager Clusters manual. The manual includes step-by-step how-to's.

Any queue manager knows about other FRs through manually defined clussdrs.

Any qmgr knows if it's a repository by repos() or reposnl().
