Hi

Basically I would like help on how to start learning programming for MQ. My past has been 13 years of basically being a Administrator for Microsoft Products.

I have recently started (1 year) carrying out adminstration of MQ on Unix and NT and find it really enjoyable and a nice change away from core NT work.

Unfortunatly I have never really needed to do programming but am sure if I could start learning this, it would benefit me greatly.

Does anybody have any tips that would help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Read a good book!

To program in MQ you must first learn to program in general.

You need to choose a preferred language to work in - obvious choices are:

C
C++
Java
Visual Basic

The trouble with VB is that it is Windows only - but that seems to be your favourite platform, so no problem

I've found that the Herbert Schildt writes excellent books on C/C++ - readable, easy-to-understand. Well, it worked for me!

Also, in my humble opinion, the MQSeries Application Program Interface (API) is a very simple and easy to use - especially as everybody copies the sample programs anyway Once you program in a language study and use the sample progs. Also, the MQ Application Programming Guide is a good read.

Good luck!

I'd also suggest that you look at the sample programs that ship with the product. There are quite a few that will give you some of the basics on what to do. There is also a software repository on this site that you can look at.
