OK, I thought I read somewhere an article about this topic but it escapes me now...

What I've seen so far to manage MQ cluster membership has been security exits (usually filtering by IP) and SSL with Peer filtering.

Are there other techniques I'm missing?

Other then the ones I just mentioned.

Links please.

Zealous network admins, blocking all ports between every machine on the network without prior change management processes...

Zealous change management admins, blocking all software/hardware installs/configurations/modifications without prior change management processes...

Zealous MQ admins, blocking all attempts to touch their qmgrs (all qmgrs are theirs, by blood right) through fear, intimidation, and the Trout of Damocles...

But strictly in the MQ space, SSL and Exits are your only options.

Here is the link to the section in the MQ Clusters Manual that talks about this:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/topic/com.ibm.mq.csqzah.doc/qc11400_.htm?resultof=%22%63%6c%75%73%74%65%72%22%20%22%70%72%65%76%65%6e%74%22%20

If your cluster includes QMs on various platforms, the exit solution can get quite tricky. You will probably have to get into channel auto-definition exits.
