there are a good few security related changes in various testing, verification, implementation stages. the goal is to ward off undesireable spammers, registers, repeat offenders, etc. who are again on the prawl in a big way.
i moved the initial posting to the right forum for such things.

We are still on php2.x. memberlist is no longer displayed nor available anymore, we tried keeping the link but not displayed on forums, but in the end had to have it removed to further ward off would be spammers. Please read below to get some background info on this.
Forum type spammers fall into at least 3 general categories:
1- those who register and post junk onto forums
2- those who register, with or without validating their membership, for the sole purpose of having their url listed at high ranking and regularly visited forums such as ours (within memberlist's imbedded profile choices)
3- those who register under a real name and lay dormant for some time before they attempt to have a go with their deeds
having tried and tested several options, we do not permit 1s and 2s to easily gain access to our forums. Removing the memberlist altogether so the offending url is not displayed nor allowed in profiles to be entered has now been implemented.
To give an example how effective the scheme has been vs 2s in particular, over the last 5 days there have been over 240 such url listing attempts that were automatically intercepted and rejected, the attempted from IP addresses captured to be banned.
FYI, please be aware that members can still view posting person's profile as before. And finally, a large scale data clean up effort is shortly getting underway to remove dormant records.

Aha! I wondered what all those stupid posts were:

Hi! Nice forum you have here. Hope to post soon! |
I would like for the tiny URL in the post itself and never find anything. I guess they would register to have their URL in the memberlist, and then post one clean post to make it look like an active account. _________________ Peter Potkay
