Does anyone have any experience with this product from Symantec (Veritas i3)? It is a deep-dive diagnostic that monitors transaction level performance. The product suite includes an MQ agent (Insight MQ Agent).

My agency is looking at this product. Information on the internet and on Symantec's site is limited. The MQ agent is fairly new to the product suite. Just wondering if anyone has any real-world experiences to share.

Thanks,
Shirley

Its an API exit at the QM level if I remember correctly. We use Transaction Vision here, so when the i3 rollout came we decided not to implement i3's MQ exit since we were happy with TV's API exit.

I did throw the i3 exit on my lab and it worked, for what its worth. But I didn't spend to much more time with it after that.

We popped the exit onto a dev server and we seem to be collecting data. I can't make head nor tails of it, however. The types of data it displays is labelled in ways that are not intuitive (to me). I hope their manuals are informative.

I also am not familiar with the concept of an API at the queue manager level. So, more reading for me.

Thanks very much for your reply, Peter.

ps One more question for you, Peter: Do you use transaction level tracking all the time in production, or just on a remedial basis?

I would need a 100 petabyte database to collect all events all the time. It would be nice to have every MQ API call captured all the time - you'd be amazed at what's really being asked of your QMs (JMS is a pig!) - but its just not practical.

For new projects we tend to turn on collection for a few days for all their queue since that is the time you will most likely need it. Otherwise we turn it on only when we need to deep dive to solve a problem. And there are some hi profile apps where we do collect just the first MQPUT and the final MQGET to capture MQ end to end transaction times.

So i3 is the new name for the new version of TransactionVision?

No, i3 is owned by Veritas / Symantec. Transaction Vision was owned by Bristol Technologies, and is now owned by HP.

ah, so it works similarly as TV? How come you got the i3 stuff then?
I thought you got it as a happy TV customer and they sent you the 'latest' version...

or does Veritas have a list of TV customers...? or...

I could keep guessing... but the fact you had both available led me to believe it was a followon...

i3 has a million other monitors, not just MQ. As they were rolling out that whole suite we did due dilligence to see if their MQ component justified us ripping out TV and replacing it.

We choose to stay with TV and not install i3's MQ monitor, although other i3 components are there now.
