I was going to redo a post reply, so I intended to delete it. But, it does not seem to be possible. I believe the old site allowed you to edit and delete any post that you made.

Yep.

Delete seems to have gone away. Edit is there, or was a few days ago.

EDIT: I can still edit this.

True, Delete posts was changed some while back. Delete function is still there for Moderators.

main reason : potential big exposure - someone or BOTs could have deleted all kinds of posts, perhaps forums in their entirety.

members can do Edits.

Allowing you to edit your post to:

"This post has been deleted"

"This post was a bad idea"

"Duh!"

Or perhaps most usefully "Moderator please delete this post"

Only if there was a bug in the forum software, or the passwords were hacked. Only the person who made the post, or a moderator, could delete. Not anyone at random.

Cheers,

Speaking of deletes, I would love to see this one:

http://www.mqseries.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=40341

but it seems to have gone ....... it looked really intriguing

Not true. As I recall, you could only delete what was yours, and only one at a time.

I have tested a good few variation of things (edits, quotes, deletes,….), using several testing member, moderator and admin IDs. Here is where things stand:

I accept corrections made by EddieA and tleichen to my earlier comment. They are right that Edits and Deletions could have only been done by the person who made the posting, and that Delete can only be done one posting at a time by the original Posting person. (Moderators can of course do such Edits and Deletes for all posts).

The Edit function can and does allow a Post or many Posts to be changed as the member wishes it to be done and, importantly, the Edited Post is time-stamped that a change was made. On the other hand, Delete will remove the Post with no displayed info that such a post was there at all.

Given that a member can Edit their existing Post and/or Quote their entire original post before modifying it with an Add Reply, I suggest that things remain as they now are: to Allow Edit that will get time-stamped but not Delete that removes the posting altogether.

Further discussion on the subject is invited if you disagree with my suggestion.
