Actually the age-old MS vs IBM issue..
I have a W2K server that will need to talk to an IBM mainframe via MQSeries.
Has anyone here used the MS HIS2K for this purpose, and can comment on cost, ease-of-use, reliability, etc. vs. the IBM API? I'm just looking a clue as to the best route to go.

I have used HIS (Host Integration Server) some times ago for three types of reason:
- using COMTI to call CICS transactions from a Windows client application.
- communicating with the mainframe with the SNA network (vs TCP/IP)
- bridging MSMQ with MQ Series (or at least testing it, but we finally did not use it, not good enough in our opinion)
The first point is that: if you can use TCP/IP on your mainframe, then you do not need HIS at all. You can interconnect Windows queue managers with mainframe queue managers without any special software.
If you are running your mainframe with SNA, then the only part of HIS you need to use is the network integration. Assuming that you have SNA experts on-board, you will find no problem in configuring it. I have not experienced any stability problem with this piece of HIS.
(within the three points of my personal experience described above:
- COMTI is a good product, not easy to master, with some issues that we can discuss outside of this forum
- the MSMQ-MQ bridge was rejected (performance and reliability issue)
- SNA bridge is no problem)
My small contribution...[/u] _________________ Nicolas Maréchal

Thanks Nicolas, the day after I first posted I found someone in my company who had attempted to use HIS, had compatibility issues with the mainframe side and was forced to retool with IBM. |
