When dealing with large amounts of persistent messages, I have run into the problem where /var/mqm fills up the partition it is on because all of the persistent messages are logged to disk. A typical UNIX install mounts /var as a single partition, which means that if MQSeries fills up this partition, nothing will be able to write to /var which typically brings the system to a standstill. One solution is to create a separate partition as /var/mqm. This way, if MQSeries fills up the partition, it won't affect other parts of the system.
Another interesting trick which I discovered (and I only know it works on AIX, though some other platforms may support this) is to use the smit administration tool to dynamically increase the partition size as necessary. In other words, if /var/mqm fills up, simply increase the amount of disk space allotted to /var or /var/mqm.

We have changed our log path. You can accomplish this in three ways:
1. Before queue manager definition
change LogDefaultPath in /var/mqm/mqs.ini
2. During queue manager definition
use ld parm on crtmqm
3. After queue manager definition
change LogPath in /mqdir/qmgrs/queuemanagername/qm.ini, where mqdir is usually /var/mqm.

We have changed our log path to provide failover functionality for our queue managers. Our logs are stored on EMC logical storage volumes that are controlled by MCServiceGuard. When failover is initiated, MCServiceGuard detaches the log volumes from the primary server and remounts them on a secondary server. Of course, there are many other things that must be configured correctly in order to get this to work, but this does provide a solution for us to retain our logs during failover.
