If anyone has implemented connecting directly to OS/390 as an MQ client, I am interested in any feedback re: issues that may have come up, especially concerning security and performance.

Well 2 issues come to mind right away
1) The Client Access Facility must be added on the mainframe to support
Client Connection (Look into XXXMSTR job log)
+CSQX099I -CSQP CSQXGIP Client attachment feature available
2) The Apps on both side need to use MQGET with convert and set the MQMD.Format to MQSTR

Hi Bob,
Yes, I'm using client attach facility on Z/OS and it works great....
When thats said, we come to security, this gives some headeke, how to verify userid and password, without opening all up for massive MQSeries signon attacks...
There are a supportpack to help you, quite simple...

Well it's not trivial to do the trick because the security exit is invoked unauth, and RVERIFY shall run auto.  But the supportpack works.
By the way there are improvements in version 5.3 of MQSeries for Z/OS on this topic, which might make these exit obsolete, don't know yet.
About performance.. it performes pretty good, ofcause it's depending on the network capacity, message size etc.
