Hello all,

I know this sounds crazy, but I'm calling them like I see 'em.
My trace file (below) says my ATServer queue doesn't exist (MQRC_UNKNOWN_OBJECT_NAME), but I can display the q (further below) with no problems.
The trace even shows the correct qmgr (TPQMGR).

Environment:
WebLogic 8.1 on SuSE 10 -- MQ is a 'Foreign JMS Provider'
MQ 5.3 on WinXP

Any suggestions would be most helpful, thanks.

If you're getting a 2085, that might mean a lot of things.

One thing it could mean is that your program is asking for the queue by the name ATSERVER, because MQ is case-sensitive and will fold names to upper case unless explicity instructed not to.

Another thing that it could mean is that your program is asking for the 'ATServer' queue, but on QMGRC instead of on QMGRA because it's passing in the wrong thing in the queue manager name in the MQOPEN. This is usually the result of improperly configured out JNDI definitions when it's a Java program.

the way I read it is: the program is asking to open ATServer, but the queue display from dis q(ATServer) clearly shows QUEUE(ATSERVER)

if the queue had been defined as: def ql('ATServer') the command
dis q(ATServer) would show
AMQ8147: WebSphere MQ object ATSERVER not found.

Ahhhh. It turns out that runmqsc display commands are case IN-sensitive and client requests are indeed case sensitive. Thanks, ibm (not).

I was originally dubious whether changing the case would impact this, but you were right!

And what do you know... DEFINE QLOCAL(ATSERVER) -- with all uppers -- was used to make the queue.

Thanks a bunch.

No, it's as case sensitive as all the rest as Michael Dag points out.

If the queue is defined DEF QL('ATServer') i.e. with quotes it will be called ATServer. DEF QL(ATServer) will get you a queue called ATSERVER.

If you've defined it DEF QL('ATServer') then DIS Q(ATServer) will yield "Queue not found" but DIS Q('ATServer') will display the details.

It's to avoid this error-prone use of quotes that MQ objects are typically defined in upper case.

Someone in Hursley has an odd sense of humour?

It's hard to see the advantage it gives. Okay, you can create 2 queues ATServer and ATSERVER so you get more queues out of the length limit but who'd define queues like that?

One site actually had alias queues for commonly used case variations...

ok, understood. The rules are so quirky (waiting for a separate redbook on case and quotes in mq) , they're hard to believe.

Easiest thing is to define all objects in upper case. Especially if there's a mainframe somewhere in the mix (ISPF does not do lower case without a fight).

Lower cases MQ objects on z/OS tends to make MQ RACF admin tricky unless you have the RACF lower case support turned on as well.
