I'm curious about how to determine the MQ client version installed and not sure if dspmqver is provided with MQ client modules.

Yes you will have dspmqver in 5.3.0.2 or later, it is provided in the base runtime component which is common to the client and server. You don't say what platform you are on but you can also use the operating system's package management commands ( lslpp, pkginfo, swlist, rpm ) to get this infomation.
