A client connection requires the following information:
1) The hostname or IP address of the machine with the qmgr on it
2) the port number of the listener for the qmgr
3) the channel name

A server or bindings connection requires the following information.
1) the qmgr name

A server or bindings connection can only be established on the same machine as the qmgr. This means the same "logical os instance" - so the same LPAR, VMWare machine, normal machine, etc.
