Hi,
We have a development estate of some 30 MQ for Windows servers. On a recent audit management identified that 90% of the boxes were totally under-utilised. We have been asked to investigate how we can remove CPUs to bring our licence count down for MQ.
I have no problem in doing this, however I would welcome any suggestions on how we should best approach it.
I know windows gives you the ability to assign individual processes to specific CPUs but this would not work with MQ as it dynamically spawns new processes all the time.
The other two suggestions were disabling via the BIOS (my preferred option) and physically removing the CPUs.
Any suggestions that would make my life easier - gratefully received.
Cheers

Alternatively consolidate multiple qmgrs on the same box. I would not go over 7 qmgrs on the same box though the problem limit seems to be 9 or 10... _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

Hi,
Thanks for that - we have hit that limit in the past are conscious of the windows QM limitation.
We don't really want to consolidate the QMs as, we have found as the number of QMs increase the ability to troublehshoot individual processes gets more difficult ...
Cheers

Time to Virtualise your hardware? Since it is development with 10% utilisation you should be able to fit 30 servers (let's say with 1 cpu each) into one physical box with 4 CPU's with GSX or ESX server or Virtual Server...
for licensing I always refer to your IBM sales rep to be sure... _________________ Michael

Also, "sub capacity licensing", where you are paying for smaller capacity than the physical number of CPUs in the machine, is *not* achived on any platform by restricting individual processes to only run on particular CPUs.
So if you have an 8 way Windows machine, running one instance of Windows (not virtualized), you can't get subcap licensing for only 2 processsors by using OS level restrictions to make sure that MQ only ever uses those 2 processors.
Unless your IBM sales representative agrees to that.
In looking at consolidating MQ servers, I would look at both consolidating the number of machines running MQ server, as well as look at conslidating the number of applications that talk to a particular queue manager.
In other words, if I start with 5 machines each running a queue manager - ideally I could end with 1 machine running a single queue manager - not one machine running 5 queue managers. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |
