What limits the number of clients that can connect to a queue manager ?
I had assumed that this was the MAXHANDS parameter of the queue manager but reading the literature ( and previous threads on this subject ) leads me to conclude that this limits the number of queue connections per client rather than the number of clients per queue manager.
Is there some other system resource involved ? ( e.g. limitations on shared memory and semaphore flags ) ?
We are running MQSeries v 5.1 on Solaris v 8 |

Yes, limitations on shared memory and semaphor flags will limit the number of connections you can establish.
As will running a horribly out of date version of the product, that is completely unsupported and on a platform that is probably unsupported by the manufacturer.
Please upgrade to MQ v6 on a supported OS. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Both. Check your platform specific documentation for details (and MAXHANDS does do what you think it does).

Upgrade. For pity's sake, upgrade. It's old software, it's tired, let it die in peace.... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Nothing would please me more than to upgrade !
Unfortunately, I have to convince the management here to give me the resources to replace Neon-MQSI first, because that doesn't work on 5.3 and higher......
P.S. Does anyone have a link to the IBM v6 download page ? All I can find is the client side stuff. Their web site is just a nightmare to navigate !!! |

You can't download MQ v6, other than the client, for free.
You can download it from Passport Advantage or PartnerWorld.
If your management does not understand the value of running supported software, then they are not properly tracking business outages caused by software issues.
Start there. Show them a recent outage caused by something you know is fixed in the newer versions, show them how much money (time = money) was spent to resolve it, that would have not been spent if they'd stayed current. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

MQSI 2.1 runs fine on MQ 5.3. If you're trying to tell me there's still a copy of the original Neon out there, I may have to run screaming from the country.....

My previous post (before jefflowrey pops up) should in no way be taken as an endorsement of the use of v2.1 in these enlightened times!
