We're using MQ v5.3 on W2K and need to use SSL on an incoming MQ channel, based on a customer request. We'll need to buy a certificate for this purpose only...no website secure or anything like that.

I've read my way through the technical piece of the SSL connections, and have been successful at making connections with trial certificates from Verisign and GlobalSign....but some of the underlying concepts have escaped me.

From Verisign, I can get an "SSL Certificate" for $400 / year. From Globalsign, I can get a "Personal Certificate" for $80 / 3 years; and based on discussions here, it looks like I can use this Personal Certificate even for my corporation.

This seems like a pretty big difference between the two; so I'm wondering if there is some crucial detail I'm overlooking.

Is there something that I'm missing....or it's as easy as going with the cheaper of the two?

Ask your customer if it is OK to have a self signed certificate (free).

Enjoy

While locally generated certificates are ok for testing, real corporations (companies, organizations,...) that want to do real business on the net will use a real cert from one of the big CA's. The CA will require that your organization provide real documentation before issuing a certificate.
