Hi, Say i want to restore back to a previous version, say 5.3 . would kust restoring back to a backed up version of /opt/mq and /var/mq suffice on solaris. it looks trivial to me that it would NOT, but wanted to clarify. would uninstalling and reinstalling be the only way...

No.

You need to REINSTALL the product, as it creates a whole bunch of files/links during installation outside the /opt/mqm tree. But the /var/mqm backup should be usable.
