Did I read this correctly? The environment variables MQSERVER, MQCHLLIB AND MQCHLTAB are not applicable in a java MQ Client environment. Is this correct?

I am not sure about that but couple of things:
1. Instead of using MQSERVER variable in environment, you can use MQEnvironment class to point to the values you want for client connection.
2. Channel tables are supported by java from version 6.
