Do you have any more information as to why the put message failed (e.g. an MQRC), and which queue or component's qmgr could not be written to?

Is it possible that you have exceeded the max open handles for the QM ?

Where do you see this error? As Matt suggests, there should be more information in a log showing queue name and MQ reason code. Can you paste the "exact" error you are getting?
(also, tell us things like platforms and versions/ csd's)
