Can I change the conname attribute in my channel to a hostname rather than an hardcoded IPAddress? something like 'hostname' as opposed to 433.223.33.44? or is it mandatory that the IPaddress should be hardcoded?

No you can put hostname or ip. The only issue comes into play is that the dns server must be available anytime the channel is started, but once the channel is running the dns(wins for ms) server is not used.
