What's wrong with this syntax

SET OutputRoot.XML.Message.Destination = LTRIM(DESID, '0');

The manual does does say you can use a LTRIM with a parameter.

Which manual says that?

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmbhelp/v6r0m0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.etools.mft.doc/ak05220_.htm

Maybe you want the position and substring functions.

Answer is in the manual , from WBIMB V5 Information center

Quote:
LTRIM is a string manipulation function, used for manipulating all data types (BIT, BLOB, and CHARACTER), that returns a character string value of the same data type and content as source_string, but with any leading default singletons removed.

Quote:

The default singleton depends on the data type of source_string:
Character ----> ' ' (space)
BLOB ---> X'00'
Bit ----> B'0'

All in all, you cannot specify 2nd argument to LTRIM , for what you want tp do , from the manual again

Quote:
The LTRIM function is equivalent to TRIM(LEADING FROM source_string).

Good luck
