Has anyone done this as I just arrived to a customer and this was sprung on me. I thought I just had to do the basic install. Will it overwrite the existing default install locations? Are there any caveats to this? Any gotchas?

NO
You can coexist different versions on the same box.
The doc should provide the details for you.
