When planning to migrate from V5.3 to V6 should I plan on suspending the membership of a QMgr on this Windows installation?

Does it matter that the QMgr is a full or partial repository in the cluster?

Our normal course of action for previous upgrades is to:
run saveqmgr to backup object definitions
leave the cluster (if the qmgr is a full repos - we nominate another qmgr in the cluster to temporarily assume full repos duties)
uninstall MQ completely - including deletion of the file system folders
    re-install MQ
rebuild QMgr and objects from the define statements
    rejoin the cluster

We're looking for a more intelligent method of upgrading, including saving the file system (and hence the qmgr definitions and OAM) this time, but I'm really unsure about the cluster....

Larry,

suspending a QMgr during upgrade does not hurt, but why do you want to rebuild the QMgr ? Do just the following:

1. Suspend your QMgr (if you want).

2. End the QMgr.

3. Store the data path with tar, cpio or what you like (/var/mqm, just because I am paranoid ).

4. Uninstall MQ version 5.3 (if you like, it is mostly not necessary).

5. Install MQ version 6..

6. Start the QMgr.

But do not:

- deletion of the file system folders

- rebuild QMgr and objects

MQ preserves the configuration, permissions and data when you remove the installation. After reinstallation of MQ (same or higher version) the configuration, permissions and data will be available again. If you have trouble, stop the QMgr, reinstalll the old MQ version, restore the data paths from the backup, and start the QMgr.

But when you delete the file system folders (/var/mqm) and recreate the QMgr, you will get another QMgr. Although the name and configuration of the QMgr will be the same, on the cluster repository you will see two QMgrs with the same name - but a different QMgr ID!

A suspended queue manager may still receive work from the cluster. You are better off completely removing it from the cluster rather than suspending. Particularly if you are going to delete the qmgr.

Secondly - you absolutely should upgrade your FRs first to ensure that you do not corrupt your v5 cluster repository with v6 objects.
