Hi Guys,

since yesterday I thought, the embedded MQ in a WebSphere application server (WAS) is not able, to set up message channels to other QMgrs. Yesterday I did a small test:

1. I had a short look to the default objects defined on the embedded QMgr, created by WAS, and found no channel definitions - except one SVRCONN channel.

2. Then I started the embedded QMgr, using the command strmqm -c.

3. Now I found all default objects, as I would expect on normal QMgrs.

4. Last but not least, I created a channel to another QMgr, pinged and started it sucessfully.

All works fine, so now my questions:

a) Is there any difference between the embedded MQ and the full version?

b) What's about licensing, when I create message channel on embedded MQ QMgrs?

c) May I update the embedded MQ by installing the normal CSDs?

d) When I install first a full MQ version, remove all default objects (and the iKeyman package), and install WAS afterwards: Do I need a full MQ license or is it licensed by the WAS license (like - as far as I know - for the embedded MQ).

e) How are these scenarios supported by IBM?

I don't think what you have is embedded MQ (but I might be wrong).
You might have installed MQ first and then WAS. In this case I think all it does is create a QMGR.
If you do it the other way, like install WAS and select embedded MQ and then install real MQ, that's when you will know what really will happen.

Vennela,

I did not install it myself, but I asked my administrator and checked the install dates. He installed WAS as you described and selected the embedded MQ server yesterday.

Right now he is installing a newer version of WAS and I could verify, that also the MQ versions already have been upgraded (new CSD).

I am talking about AIX.

What is the name of your qmgr? Issue the dspmq command. WAS creates a very specific type of name for its embedded qmgr (something like WAS_hostname_server1).

I have no direct access to the machine, but I have seen such a strange name yesterday.

I asked my admin now. The name is WAS_DefaultNode_server1.
