I am looking for advice on how best to capture system metrics and trending statistics to monitor overall 'health' of the MQ/MQSI infrastructure and to use to tune/optimize individual message flows.

I am using Tivoli for MQ to monitor the typical events (channel down, queue depth, etc.). This product will capture metrics at the Q manager & channel level, but not any deeper granualrity (like at the individual queue level). We can write custom code (and there is a redbook that describes how) to capture metrics at the granular level, but IBM has advised us to look at purchasing software from Bristol for this purpose.

Has anyone attempted to write exits from Tivoli for MQ to to capture metrics (such as enque & deque counts for a given queue in a given time period)? Was this easy to do ? Would you recommend thuis versus buying a solution ?

Can anyone provide recommendations on how the Bristol offering compares to Candle, Q Pasa, and other vendor solutions ?

Be carefull with that !

I don't think you want to overload your MQ system with inquire on thing like curdepth and stuff like that. You would be better to use internal queue high and low or something like that.
