Does anyone know the steps that are needed for setting up MQseries and XA for Sybase also is there any sample code available for the same.

Have a look at MQSeries Administration Guide, Chapter 12. There is a section on Sybase configuration.
Also there is a sample code in <MQSeries_root>toolscxatm directory.
