Does anyone know if MQ for Windows NT v5.1 will run on W2K or W2K3? If not what is the best version to upgrade to in terms of knowledge transfer etc. I am assuming that the later products will have a lot more funtionality etc?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated. I have a v5.1 running on NT and as of 31st Demeber I have just been informed that NT will no longer be supported in the windows domain.
Cheers

Just for the record we have tried v5.1 on W2K3 but it appears to be very flaky. It will frequently fail with cannot connect to qmgr messages (various different messages) |

Even version 6 is not significantly different than v5.1 in terms of general concepts and etc.
It is fastly improved in speed, and has a lot of new features. But you'll be able to get done the things you need to get done without having to learn all of the new features all at once.
If you're not comfortable with moving to version 6, then switch to version 5.3, and apply the most recent fix pack. And plan on moving to version 6 in the next year - you should take this opportunity to work out plans to implement change every six months or so. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

As jeff said, WMQ looks basically the same since 5.1, but there are a few important improvements towards 5.3 (I mention not v6, since I personally consider it yet unstable):
1. MQ Clusters are far more stable, and have more informative error messagesw.
2. If memory serves (it may not), you can't use wildcards in setmqaut in 5.1, since 5.2 you can.
3. As jeff said, performance has been vastly improved.
4. Better stability and availability in general, plus compatibility with hardware cluster solutions (MSCS, HACMP).
5. Some very handy sample progs.
6. Many bugs fixed.
In short, change to 5.3, you shan't regret it; If you know v5.1, then you know v5.3, as well as v6. |

Of course, you could argue that you should move to v6.0. v5.1 has long been out of support and you know that v6.0 will be the longest in support from this point in time. |

Using the same argument, you could say the latest beta version is the best to use in production systems, since it will be longest in support |
