Hi,
Can anybody tell me whether queue managers *need* to be stopped when doing a UNIX system backup? The MQ documentation (& redbook) states "The system backup must have been performed when all queue managers were stopped."
We don't currently stop our qmgrs to do this backup. Will this affect recovery? Does anyone have an opinion, or any horror stories of why we should do this? (We are using circular logging & therefore can't use media recovery.)
Thanks,
Vicky |

The only issues with backing up with queue managers while running are:
1) if there is any persistent message activity the Q data file and the log
will be out of sync.
2) One of the log files will not backup because MQSeries has it open and
changing it depending on the level of persistent message.
So if you have to restore from tape the only thing you will have to do is create a new set of log files and move them into place.
Creating log files:
1) On a seperate machine do crtmqm with the exact same QMGR Name and logfile
size settings the copy/move them to /var/mqm/log/QMGR_NAME
2) Then strmqm, this may take a couple of minutes to start depending on how
the queue manager came down previously.
(assuming some form of crash since you are resotring)
NOTE: There is a small possiblity of having a corrupted queue, which would have
to be deleted and recreated, I Suggest backing up the queue definitions with the
IBM Support Pac MS03 then if you create script/bat file to recreate the queue manager and use the backup of the definitions to finish it this would be faster.
IF you have any special setmqaut commands they should be maintained in a script/bat.
