Were you in East Germany or West Germany when the Wall came down?
How did you feel about it?
How have things changed?
I know it was kinda rough for the first year or so but now that the wall has been down for a few years, are you glad that Germany is re-united? _________________ Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial. |

Hi Chris,
I was actually in West Germany.
Well, when the wall came down I was only 8. So I don't remember that much of it. Especially not how it felt for me. But in generall people were celebrating everywhere. And they played Wind of Change. All the time. Over and Over again.
I think it is a good thing that we are reunited.
There used to be a lot of tension between the 2 Germanies and their people. Friends became enemys over night, when the wall was built.
Hard to say how things changed...
I think there was still some tension in the first couple of years, because there was so much money going to the former east, and things (for example roads) over in the West were getting worse and worse, and nobody bothered to repair them.
If you see the reunion from a pure monetary point of view it was a desaster.
There were billions going to Russia to make it happen. We more or less bought East Germany back.
When the borders where oppened, all the people from the East had all of the sudden claims to the public pension, unemployment, wellfare, etc. funds, but obviously had never payed into it. And that the german social system is one of the, if not the most expensive systems in the world is not a secret.
There are still problems in the former East Germany regions.
The unemployment rates are all the time at record levels. In some regions we are talking about 50%.
Wages are still a lot lower in the former East Germany.
Some people over there even wish they could have the DDR back.
But after all, I am glad there is one united Germany! I think it is a good thing for the people in East-and West-Germany, Europa and even the entire world.
We should not forget what the allies did for us after WW2.
Without this help, the reunion would certainly not have been possible.
cheers
